One of the singular powers of poetry is its ability to address the "big questions" of life with dizzying economy. Check out Edward Hirsch's poem, "Self Portrait." You won't be sorry.
Poetry has the ability to look at these issues in a more abstract way. Novels have to actually create characters and plot. On this issue I urge you to take a look at some confessional poetry such as anne sexton or Edna St. Vincent Millay. It's pretty dreary, however they do often discuss women making difficult choices. Yes folks that's an English Lit BA at work.
